Don’t put harsh chemicals/wastes down the drain

This includes standard things like paint or paint thinner from art projects, but many people flush items like old medications. These can kill the good bacteria needed in your septic tank and soil absorption field and cause contamination.

Conserve water

The more water introduced to your system, the bigger toll it takes. Economy in the use of your water not only can help the longevity of your septic system, but can also lower your monthly water bills if you use a public water supply.

Check for and replace leaking septic tanks

A leaking tank is usually not detectable until the tank lid is opened and checked; pumping out your tank on a regular basis is an easy way to check. If the liquid level is low, or if water flows back into the tank from the seam or a hole, your tank may be leaking.

The wastewater seeping out of a leaking tank has had less treatment than the effluent filtering through the system’s absorption area. This less-treated water eventually filters into the underground drinking water supply, and less treatment equals higher risk for contamination.
