Cold Weather Can Be Oh So Frightful On Your Septic System

In South Texas we don’t have to worry much about freezing septic systems — we consider ourselves lucky if we get a few weeks of “winter” weather every year. However, since it’s “better safe than sorry,” there are a couple things you might want to consider during the winter months to keep your system functioning properly.

Use caution when dripping your faucets. Many people drip their faucets to prevent plumbing pipes from freezing and busting. However, in some cases this can lead to flooded septic systems. If you choose to drip your faucets, consider dripping them only at night time when the temperatures are the lowest to prevent system overload.

Don’t add antifreeze to the septic system. Antifreeze can harm the bacteria in your septic system, and may cause more expense in the future when pumping the tank as it may require a special type of waste hauler.

For conventional/standard septic systems, it is extremely rare in our area for the system components to freeze or bust. However, we find it slightly more common with the spray lines in aerobic systems, since they are usually buried closer to the surface.
